Utility Rates & Charges

Our sewage has been backing up. Right next to the pipe connecting our house to the sewer line running down our street stands a year-old willow oak, and I worry the tree’s roots have found their way, during the droughty past year, into our line. Maybe it’s tree roots, maybe it’s a collapsed pipe, maybe it’s a yo-yo. The snake went in only a dozen feet or so and found a clog, and now the little claw at the end is spinning. Once he pulls it out we’ll know better what’s going on. I leave him to his business, though I cast an annoyed glance at the oak. Sewer pipes fit together simply, with a bell joint, and tiny root hairs find their way to the nutrient-rich flow, then grow larger, eventually growing large enough to shatter the vitreous clay pipe that forms so many service lines or dislodge a joint if the pipes are cast iron. Nobody knows what our pipes, 70 years old, are made of, but I fear we’re about to find out. Fifteen minutes later he’s winding the snake back up, writing a bill, and exonerating the oak. The entire paper industry in recent years has worked to develop more and more flushable items:

How does it work? First, owners will indicate their interest in a project, without any obligation, by completing a project request form so that cost estimates can be developed for a neighborhood or concentration of interested owners. Once the initial costs are estimated, the interested owners will work within their neighborhoods to determine the interest in participating and decide with the group if a project is feasible based on the amount of participation.

A project must have at least 50 percent participation in order for it to move forward.

As with any city, county, or state, there are specifics about utility providers and regulations that are unique to that region. Houston is no different in this regard. The city of Houston and the state of Texas have created some excellent resource for shopping rates and providers. Gas Gas is a little bit different than Electricity. Centerpoint Energy is the provider in Houston for most households.

However, if you live in one of the smaller towns or cities such as Bellaire, or the City of West University in the Houston Metro area, it may be offered by those localities. Many neighborhoods and Homeowners associations contract with private garbage pick-up to serve the homes under their jurisdiction. However, many cities and towns within the Houston Metro area contract garbage pick-up through their local city or town. If your garbage pick-up is serviced by the city of Houston, you can set-up your garbage pick-up when you set up your Water and Sewer account.

They provide a one-stop shop for searching for utility services in Houston. Read the Full post here:

Everything is working beautifully. I wanted to fill you in. It took me about 2 hours today run the water lines under the house from the kitchen to the garage and connect them. I can’t hear the pump from inside the house and and there is no vibration through the wall when it runs.

There is no sound from the drain water under the sink. I’m getting great water pressure out of the RO faucet. If you stand next to the sink in my kitchen you would have no idea the system was there except I have the extra faucet. There are no leaks anywhere. I tested my city water is and it’s at ppm and smells like Clorine.

With submersible pumps the electric motor and the pump are installed inside the well as a single cylindrical unit, so the pump actually pushes the water up. In contrast, jet pumps act like a long straw, using high pressure to create a vacuum suction that draws water to the surface. Shallow jet pumps up to 25′ deep have the equipment mounted at the surface, while a deep well jet pump has an ejector installed inside the well.

Penicillium Stachybotrys Of these, acremonium, aspergillus, and stachybotrys are the most dangerous, requiring immediate removal. The other three are hazardous to people with allergic reactions to mold and should also be removed immediately. A home built before should be inspected for lead in the paint as well as pipes. Paint that has been on since is probably old, cracked and peeling, anyway, but most people simply paint over such situations.

However, if the paint is cracking or peeling it will need to be encapsulated with a bonding agent to prevent lead-infused dust from getting into the air you breathe. Lead pipes can leech lead into your drinking water.

There could be a problem with your pressure regulator or possibly an over heat issue in the water heater.

Pressure Washing Prices The dirt and debris that inevitably accumulate on your deck can negatively impact its appearance and lead to premature aging. Fortunately, a pressure washer can be used to quickly and easily power away mold, dirt, stains, and even everyday wear. Pressure washing should also be performed prior to painting or staining your deck, as a clean surface is necessary for proper finish adhesion. Pressure Washing and Power Washing Aren’t the Same Many people use the terms “power washing” and “pressure washing” interchangeably, but the two services are in fact different.

While both use powerful streams of water, power washing relies on hot water, which in general does a better job of blasting away stubborn buildup and debris. A pressure washer, by contrast, uses a very powerful, concentrated water stream to clean surfaces. So which is right for your deck?

Please see this recent post on system development fee law changes for the most current look at the cost to connect to a water and wastewater system. It is now also the question that may be haunting some municipal water managers throughout North Carolina after a recent North Carolina Supreme Court decision involving water impact fees. These words are not found in the almost identical statutes that authorize fees for other public water utilities Counties, and Cities: There are many ways of calculating and labeling up front water fees across North Carolina as shown in a detailed survey of these fees carried out by the Environmental Finance Center in Industry standards put out by professional organizations such as the American Water Works Association and the Water Environment Federation that guide consultants in advising how to calculate system development charges include multiple methods for calculating these charges, some which consider future costs and some which only consider past costs.

The North Carolina case highlights how important state law and state cases are in determining acceptable practices.

A pressure regulator is placed in-between your home and the city water coming from the curb.

Septic systems have limited life spans and frequently fail, impacting the environment and the community’s water quality. See the Frequently Asked Questions below for more information. Frequently Asked Questions What costs are involved in converting from septic to sewer? There can be four major costs in converting from a septic system to sewer service: The estimates shown are approximate costs for connection in , and should be adjusted accordingly for later years.

Penicillium Stachybotrys Of these, acremonium, aspergillus, and stachybotrys are the most dangerous, requiring immediate removal.

Some require minimal work with minimal materials. Other sewer main installs require lots of excavation and red tape to ensure everything is up to code. While you may not be able to control everything, knowing all cost factors and understanding how each affects the bottom line will surely help you keep your final sewer line replacement price down.

Location Like any plumbing project , bigger projects demand bigger pocketbooks. For a sewer main, the distance between your home and the connector line will largely determine how big this project will be. Longer sewer lines require more materials and more time for installation. Therefore, the longer the sewer line that is needed, the more the project will cost. House Type Most of us prefer a stand-alone house to a condo or townhouse, but sewer line installations present a unique benefit to those in the latter.

Permits Municipal permits are usually required for a sewer main installation. Contractors or plumbers typically take care of the necessary paperwork, but as the homeowner, it’s ultimately your responsibility to ensure everything is handled properly. The cost of a permit depends on the nature of the work and the cost of the project, and it often varies between jurisdictions.

Anything in the way has to be removed before a new sewer line can be installed. Depending on the work, you may have to call a mason or landscaper to complete all the work. This of course raises your new sewer line cost.

Water

Essentially it’s a large-scale version of a gallon rain barrel. Unlike a water well , cisterns aren’t used to tap an underground water source but rather to store gathered water. Cisterns can be made of metal, fiberglass, polyethylene plastic , poured concrete, concrete blocks, stones or wood. Cisterns typically have a secure cover, and can be aboveground, partially buried or underground. Total costs for installing a cistern system depend on capacity, whether the water will be used for irrigation or indoor residential use, and how the water is delivered to where it will be used hose or underground pipes, gravity flow or discharge pump.

Other prime factors in the cost are whether the cistern will be aboveground or underground, and if the stored water will be used for irrigation or indoor residential use.

You can also compromise by installing pull-out shelves and lazy susans in standard cabinets to maximize their storage space.

Power fee’s usually don’t have a hookup fee and are based on length of wire run, materials, transformer, etc.

Water fee’s generally have a hookup fee which can be a few hundred dollars to thousands, and they will have a meter fee. Also depending if they stubbed out a line from the main to the curb when the main was first installed there will be a substantial charge to tap the main and run a line to the edge of your property. And there will be a substantial fee if they did not stub out to your property line, this charge can be quite a lot depending on how deep the sewer main is.

Phone and cable are usually cheap compared to everything else. Or do you have to dig the portion of the trench that is on your property from the curb to the house? How about the water line? That depends on the utility company some will allow you to have another contractor dig the ditch, some will not.

Prioritize what you want done during the remodel, in case the funds run out. Figure out how you are going to pay for this remodel.

You need two hands to use a bow, regardless of its size.

Water Main Prices The cost to replace a main water line depends on a whole host of factors. To begin, it is important to know how water lines are set up. One portion leads from the city main to a meter on your property and another section goes from the meter into your home. If the problem occurs on the city’s side then they should be held responsible for the cost. If it is on your end then prepare to start looking for a plumber. A number of factors will cause the price of water main installation to increase.

If you need to jackhammer through concrete, this will also raise the price. Depth of the line: The part of the country you live in determines what kind of materials will be used.
