Character Changes Caused by Addiction Much has been written about the changes which take place in alcoholics as the disease progresses Jellinek, ; Polich et al. These researchers and others have found a number of psychological and biological changes, which appear to be associated with alcoholism. At the psychological level there has developed a recognizable cluster of personality traits associated with alcoholism, including a low tolerance for stress, feelings of inadequacy, impaired impulse control, isolation and a negative image of self.
There seems to be agreement that at a point in the progression of the disease, people cross into alcohol addiction. When this happens, alcoholics can no longer predict their behavior while drinking, or even whether or not they will drink. These include grandiosity, omnipotence and low frustration tolerance. As alcohol becomes more dominant, the need to deny these changes becomes greater. It appears that there is an interaction between physiological changes and psychological defenses which creates emotional immaturity, self-centeredness and irresponsibility.
Alcoholism becomes a thought disorder as well as an addiction to alcohol. These qualities would accurately describe the primary defenses and interpersonal style typical of normal development in the first three years of life. Alcoholics increasingly utilize the psychological defenses of denial, undoing, isolation, and rationalization to keep from facing reality.
As the disease develops, the two-year-old becomes predominant while the adult influence atrophies with disuse. The use of alcohol and other drugs strengthens the power of the two-year-old and at the same time weakens the adult.

By David Sack, M. In fact, addicts who are solid in their recovery can make excellent partners. But before you put yourself in a position to fall for an addict, there are a few things you need to know: For anyone considering dating an active addict, it is important to realize that love cannot conquer addiction. At all times, Break the Cycle encourages readers to take whatever precautions necessary to protect themselves emotionally and psychologically. And while alcohol itself does not cause dating violence, it can aggravate it. The abuse of alcohol is accompanied by a craving to drink, a loss of control, physical dependence and high tolerance.
Alcoholism has little to do with willpower and a lot to do with an uncontrollable need to drink. So why is this disease so easily linked to dating abuse? Why is alcohol use such a significant risk factor? For victims, the combination of alcohol abuse and dating violence can lead to addiction as well as other issues like eating disorders, depression and suicidal thoughts.
For abusive partners, using alcohol may lead them to become physically violent more quickly, scream, yell or escalate a normal conversation into a violent one. By blaming alcohol for their behavior, abusive partners can refute responsibility for their actions or shy away from addressing their addiction. However, intoxication does not alter personality. How a person behaves when they are drunk is a reflection of themselves.

Help Dating a Recovering Alcoholic I have gone a few dates with a guy, a great guy so far , who’s over a year “sober”. I’m a casual drinker, which he doesn’t seem to have any problem with whatsoever. My two best friends, also casual drinkers, say this is a HUGE red flag, that alcoholics, even ones in recovery, are difficult to deal with. Sort of like dating a christian when you’re an atheist. I have a college friend who is in recovery, and I adore her.
Other than that, I don’t have much interface with addicts, I guess. Have any DLers dated or are dating a recovering alcoholic? Was it worth it? Am I being ridiculous even asking this? People get all whacked out about dating someone that is in recovery or had a problem in the past. There are good people in the world who have turned their life around and deserve to be loved.

If You Love Someone with Alcoholic Parents :: Guess What Normal Is
I receive a lot of emails from people who are in a relationship with an adult child of alcoholics. Ideally, every baby born into this world is surrounded by unselfish, patient love and nurturing from at least one or two parents. This comes primarily form the mother in the very beginning, who is supported by a loving, consistent partner. The more inconsistency and chaos in the household, the more stress on the baby—which means more cortisol produced in the body.
What follows is in no way to be interpreted as an excuse for bad behavior, by the way. Just like anyone adult child, or not , if someone has issues that are unresolved, the relationship will be used, in some fashion, to process the issues.

Partner and Managing Editor, Betterafter She was a redhead who smoked menthols, loved music, dancing and beer. Her father was a judge, a real one, but she herself was totally non-judgmental. Tammy was the friend that held the ice to my ear freshman year and then pierced a second hole in my left lobe, sterilizing the needle with the alcohol from our sloe gin fizzes. She would drag me to frat parties, grab a beer and start dancing, while I stood awkwardly in a corner complaining about the sticky floor.
I was one of the girls who left the party early, but Tammy always stayed and regaled us with great stories the next day. But as we got to be juniors and then seniors, the stories became increasingly uncomfortable to hear.
